When a Seed Planted Years Ago Finally Sprouts…

Self-promotion time here, folks — but then this is my blog, so I’m allowed to do this every now and then….

Whether it’s a throwaway gag — like we have here — or a world-shattering plot twist, it’s massively satisfying for a writer to be given the chance to harvest a tiny seed they planted a long time ago!

Paradox Vega is a young, irrepressibly enthusiastic mutant thief/trouble-maker/self-appointed champion of the oppressed. She first appeared as a minor character in “Judge Dredd: Deep in the Heart” (2000AD #2012-#2019, Jan-Feb 2017), and then a few months later she played a larger role in “Judge Dredd: Ouroboros” (2000AD #2041-#2044, Jul-Aug 2017)… and then she disappeared until this month’s issue of Judge Dredd Megazine — #466 — where she shows up to save both the day and the hero. (Actually, Vega has a silhouetted cameo appearance in one panel of last month’s issue, but I doubt anyone noticed it!)

I knew from the beginning that Vega’s uncanny knack for getting out of trouble (or often into trouble) was key to her character, but I’ve deliberately held back from explaining just how that actually works, until now. Except of course that knowing how something works is not the same as knowing why it works…

Will she come back again? That’s up to the editor, of course, but I have plans: she’s a lot of fun to write!
